Gas Diffusion Coefficient: A Key Parameter That Determines How Fast Gas Moves Through Materials

In the study of polymer films, barrier materials, and flexible packaging, gas transport behavior plays a critical role in material performance. Today, we take a closer look at an important parameter that directly affects gas transmission performance—the gas diffusion coefficient.

The gas diffusion coefficient can be understood as the “migration speed” of gas molecules inside a material. It describes how quickly gas molecules move directionally from regions of high concentration to regions of low concentration within the material. A higher diffusion coefficient indicates that gas molecules can move more rapidly through the material structure.

Relationship Between Gas Diffusion Coefficient and Gas Permeability

In practical applications, gas permeability is a more commonly referenced performance indicator. So how are these two parameters related?

The complete process of gas passing through a material can be viewed as a two-step process:

  1. Dissolution – Gas molecules first dissolve into the surface of the material.

  2. Diffusion – Dissolved gas molecules then migrate through the material under the driving force of a concentration gradient.

The gas permeability coefficient represents the overall efficiency of this entire process, while the gas diffusion coefficient describes only the speed of the diffusion step within the material.

Their relationship can be expressed by the classic equation:

Permeability = Solubility Coefficient × Diffusion Coefficient

This means that gas permeability depends not only on how easily gas molecules enter the material (solubility), but also on how fast they move within it—precisely the role of the diffusion coefficient.

Understanding Barrier Performance from a Kinetic Perspective

In essence, the gas diffusion coefficient acts as the “speed factor” in gas permeation behavior. A clear understanding of this parameter enables a more accurate, kinetic-level interpretation of a material’s barrier or gas transmission performance, supporting better material evaluation, product development, and testing decisions.
